2023 Workshop on Structure-preserving Algorithms with Applications

Introduction:

This workshop aims at structure-preserving algorithms for differential equations, a field which has been developed systematically for nearly four decades with huge amount of literature. The field has attracted more and more extensive attention since two plenary talks were given by C. Lubich and M. Jordan at the ICM 2018 at Rio de Janeiro (see L. Gauckler, E. Hairer and C. Lubich: Dynamics, Numerical Analysis, and Some Geometry, Proc. ICM Rio de Janeiro 2018, Vol. 1 (453-486) and M. Jordan: Dynamical, Symplectic and Stochastic Perspectives on Gradient-Based Optimization, Proc. ICM Rio de Janeiro 2018, Vol. 1 (523-550)). This event highlights the research on the structure-preserving algorithms in the community of mathematics and applications.
The workshop invites 4-5 active experts in the field of structure-preserving algorithms and applications to give series of lectures. These lectures cover four research aspects: symplectic integration for Hamiltonian systems (ODEs and PDEs), the modulated Fourier expansion and its applications, Geometric mechanics and variational integrators, and the state-of-the-art structure-preserving algorithms with applications. The aim is to bring together some active experts to train young postdocs and students on one hand, and to discuss old unsolved problems and explore new research directions on the other hand.
